Product Review: Seed Starting Supplies

Growing plants from seeds is an economical way to garden. There are many products available today for starting seeds indoor that help promote good strong roots and easy transplanting into the garden in spring. Get a jump start on spring seed starting with these helpful products:

Seed Starting Systems - these systems are an all-in-one type of unit that includes a reservoir for water collection, individual cell planting blocks and a clear plastic vented cover. These kits provide an environment similar to a greenhouse in an effort to promote good seed sprouting results.

Biodegradable Pots - these pots are an old-time favorite of gardeners and they are the most economical type of seed starting system you can purchase. They are environmentally-friendly and, since you transplant the entire pot into the ground they reduce root shock.

Compare Available Seed Starting Products from Gardener's Supply Co. & Park Seed Co.:

Gardener’s Supply Company offers a nice selection of systems, trays and paper pots. One of their most popular is the APS-40 Seed Starting Kit which includes a 40 cell planting tray, reservoir, capillary mat and greenhouse cover. Replacements parts are available so these systems can be used for many years. This system provides enough cells for 40 plants and starts at $12.95 (about $.32 per plant). Other sizes are available.

Their biodegradable pots are miniature looking brown paper bags and are available in two sizes starting at $4.95.

Currently, Gardener's Supply Company is offering FREE shipping on orders of $55 or more.

Park Seed Company offers several varieties of their Bio Dome Systems from Holland. The system includes bottom tray, clear plastic vented cover, 60-cell planting block, 60 bio sponges (planting medium) and a free packet of seedling food. Prices start at $19.95 (about $.33 per plant) for this 60-cell system. Other sizes are available.

Their jiffy pots are made out of sturdy peat moss and are available in two sizes starting at $4.95.

Both companies offer additional seed starting supplies, and a shipment tracking online system. I personally like to use the basic deep-rooting cell trays, and have had very good experience with them in my zone 9 garden. I have spoken with northern gardeners who swear by the dome-type kits. You may find it necessary to experiment with a few diffferent types to see what works best for you.
