Designing Gardeners
For the past few weeks, I've received many e-mails from gardeners in search of a good landscape design software program at a good price. So, I got busy and started searching around and reading reviews. And what I discovered is that Better Homes & Garden Landscaping and Deck Designer 7.0 (Windows 98 /2000/XP/Vista) has the highest consumer feedback and is more reasonably priced than other products. I could go on to explain some of the features of this software, but I think you'll find this brief video more helpful and entertaining.

At Amazon you can purchase this software for $59.99 (14% off the list price), or you could save another $10 by purchasing from a secondary seller on Amazon. These companies are listed under "More Buying Choices "and sell either used or new products. More times than not, when I purchase from Amazon I buy from one of these secondary sellers. To date, I have never been dissatisfied with any products I have purchased from them.
Calling all gardeners!!! If you have experience with any landscape software, please leave your comments and feedback so we all can benefit from your experience. Thanks!

Think Spring!
If like me, you garden in a climate that doesn't receive enough cold weather to chill all of the beautiful spring blooming bulbs, you can still enjoy them by planting pre-chilled bulbs. From time to time, I store tulip bulbs in the vegetable drawer of my refrigerator through the winter. In January, I plant them in the garden or in pots so that I can enjoy the beautiful flowers. My favorites are tulips, but I've also tried daffodils and had good success.
If you didn't plan ahead and store some bulbs (or plant them last fall in cooler climates), there are nurseries from whom you can purchase pre-chilled bulbs. Right now, Blooming Bulb has limited quantities of pre-chilled bulbs (daffodils, hyacinths & tulips) on sale. As a bonus, they are also offering "free shipping" on these bulbs.

Going Green!
One of my new year's resolutions was to live more environmentally-friendly. I try to look at what I buy and how I do things in an effort to tread a little lighter on the earth. Since being "green" is in, it is easy to find lots of great products on the market. The only problem is that they usually cost more than I would like to spend. So in order to abide by my resolution and satisfy the thrifty side of my nature, I am always in search of bargains. The latest one I've found is Gaiam's Annual Green Sale where you can save 25% off select bedding. As an extra benefit, they are offering $10 off a $50 order through January 31st with the use of this coupon code: AP2P (Enter code in the "Catalog Key Code/Web Code" box).
I ordered a king size pair of 250-thread count organic sateen sheets (original price $162) that I found in their outlet department. The final price came to $55 (for a savings of $107), and the extra $10 off coupon covered the shipping costs.

Who cares if it’s snowing outside when you’ve got something great to read. In the current issue of Organic Gardening (one of my favorites) they provide the scoop on new varieties they tested in their regional gardens, as well as planting natives for year-round beauty. Garden Design (another favorite) features 11 award-winning gardens (and their secrets) in diverse climates. Use the current coupon offer at Magazines.com to save $5 off the subscription price. Remember to use the coupon code “wintermags” at checkout to get your $5 discount.

It Pays to Order Early!
Since the coldest weather in the last 5 years wiped out many of my tropical plants (see Simply Susan blog for the sad photos), I'm taking advantage of Blooming Bulb's Spring Early-Order Sale (save 25%) to try some new varieties. I am thinking about some canna lily bulbs. Some varieties, including Black Knight and City of Portland (a particularly nice coral-pink) are on sale for $.97 a bulb. That's a deal that's hard to pass up. I can't plant large masses of flowers in my yard because of size restraints, but for those who do their bulk seed is a great price, too.
